The fifth episode of the fifth season of Cupcake Wars was all about Rock and Roll. The prize was for the cupcakes to be presented at the Los Angeles opening night VIP party of the musical Rock of Ages.

The judges for this episode were of course Candace Nelson of the world’s first cupcake bakery- Sprinkles Cupcakes, and the classic Florian Bellanger of MadMac Macarons. The guest judge was Tommy Shaw- famous rock artist.

The four competing bakeries were Diana Sahakian for Twelve Twenty-six Events located in Studio City, California; Letty Alvarez for LA Sweets located in Miami, Florida; Kisha Williamson for Create Your Own Cake Bakery located in Santa Clarita, California; and Megan Faulkner Brown for Sweet Tooth Fairy located in Utah, Arizona and Texas.

The taste test challenge was to incorporate at least three crazy rock star requested gig food ingredients, with a choice of the following: tequila, beer, gummy bears, pizza, bacon, lemons, strawberry, red wine, potato chips, peanut butter, tobasco, banana, brie, cranberries, and boiled nuts.

Letty chose her husband as her partner and he seriously messed up the batter the cupcakes. Kisha also failed the texture of her cakes, as it turned out she forgot to add sugar to the batter. Kisha Williamson was eliminated for her sugar mistake.

The second challenge was to decorate the cakes with the spirit of Rock and Roll. Fifty percent of the points were awarded for decoration, and fifty percent for taste. Megan Faulkner Brown rocked with her decorations, giving the cupcakes a brûlée flamed top. Letty had issues with her cupcakes again as she burnt an entire batch. At the end of this round, it was Diana who was eliminated for failing on cupcake execution.

The final round had Megan and Letty going head to head in a 1,000-cupcake Rock battle. They each had the help of a carpenter and four assistants to make their dream come to life. Megan had a rock stage presentation stand, with leather and metal details. Letty had a really cool idea with real guitars and a smoke machine.

In the end, it was Megan Faulkner Brown who won. The judges appreciated her attention to detail and incorporating the feeling of Rock and Roll. Her reward was $10,000 and presenting her cupcakes at the VIP Rock of Ages party. She realled rocked the competition.
