Almost every aspect of our offline lives has been modified by the Internet to some degree over the last few years, but one major activity has yet to have a boost by technology — until now. Yes, you can now send somebody a beer over the Internet.

Online networking application Tweet-A-Beer is getting a lot of buzz this week after announcing a new product that allows you to send a beer to any one of your Twitter followers. Yes, you can now send your Twitter buddies a beer with the click of a mouse or the tap of a smartphone screen. Tweet-A-Beer works by connecting your Twitter and PayPal accounts, which then sends a $5 credit to the Twitter handle you wish to send the “beer” to.

Hats off to the developers of the app, Waggener Edstrom Worldwide and tenfour, who were able to build the app for launch within six weeks. The app launched at the tech conference SXSW, which led to a great response and a mountain of web-based press coverage from blogs like Mashable.com. So, it is fair to assume that there is a lot of beers being shared on Twitter this week thanks to Tweet-A-Beer!

If you have ever thanked somebody by telling them that you would buy them a beer the next time you saw them… well, you now have no excuse not to follow through with your promise!

And, just incase anyone out there was interested… my Twitter handle is @rmay and I never turn down a pint of Steamwhistle and Molson Canadian.
