DiGiorno Pizza has issued a statement regarding their recent marketing campaign. In the advertisements, the pizza company compares two of the frozen DiGiorno pizzas to one delivery pizza. Their add says it like this, “two DiGiorno pizzas > one delivery pizza.” Unfortunately for their advertising firm, many people do not know what the > sign means.
If you remember back to your high school math days, the > and < signs are representative of terms. > is the statement that the left side is greater than the right. Alternatively, < is the statement that the right side is greater than the left. For example, 2>1, 1<2.
DiGiorno has created the “law” of pizzaplicity. Their statement that they are worth more than double a delivery pizza is based on statistics. They looked at the cost of a 12″ supreme pizza with ten of the leading delivery chains. They found that the delivery companies use a surcharge for the act of delivery and that raised the prices. Using the mathematics, they determined that on average, their pizzas were worth less than half the price of delivery.
It seems like a strange marketing campaign for a pizza brand to use mathematics in their posters. Perhaps the age ranges that buy the most frozen pizza are geeky college students.
