Mars Inc., the manufacturers of delicious treats like Snickers and Mars bars (not to mention products from other popular brands like Bounty, Twix, Milky Way and M&Ms) has just announced that they will be slimming down their Snickers Bar – along with other snacks – to make them more appealing to health-conscious consumers.

By the end of the year, the king-sized Snickers pack (which contains 540 calories) will no longer be available. By the end of 2013, Snickers (along with many other Mars Inc. treats) will be less than 250 calories.

Registered dietician Jennifer Ventrelle reveals that, while the new slimmed-down version of the popular snack might be healthier than its current version, dieters should be aware that it’s still not the ideal snack. “A snack should be 100 to 200 calories — stick to the lower end of the range if you’re dieting, the upper end if you’re trying to maintain your weight,” Ventrelle says.

In addition to cutting calories, the new-and-improved Snickers will also contain 25% less sodium.

Go ahead and indulge – everything is good in moderation, right?
