Last month New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg made a controversial decision to ban sugary drinks over 16 ounces. He then expanded the ban to include unhealthy foods. Today we learnt that he is now targeting alcoholic drinks.

The city Health Department is currently conducting a phone survey to come up with statistics on alcohol and drug use in New York City. The goal of this survey is to determine the drinking problems of the citizens and to determine the best course of action to make the people healthier. A Health Department representative, Sam Miller, stated that ” We routinely conduct surveys about important health issues to learn more about them, and underage and excessive drinking are serious health issues.”

The weekly maximum recommended intake of alcohol for a man in the United States is no more than 14 units a week, while in the United Kingdom it is up to 21 units. Any more and you would be considered a binge drinker.

What do you think of a possible alcohol ban in NYC?
