Masterchef Season 3 Premiere 2012 – “How stupid of you to be so ignorant!”

The premiere of Masterchef came right after the premiere of Hell’s Kitchen. On an exciting high from all the yelling of that show, Masterchef seemed like a glass of cool water. Finally we got to see people who could actually cook!

Over 100 untrained home cooks were ushered in to compete for a spot on Masterchef. The standouts to me were Michael, Monte, Samantha, Ryan, and Christine.

Michael is a 19-year-old Asian boy right out of high school. His parents are unhappy with his choice of career. They would rather him be more interested in math or chemistry than cooking. As he spoke with the judges, it came out that he is also gay. He does not yet have a boyfriend, as he thinks that it is disrespectful to date before being a full adult.

Monti Carlo (seriously), is a single mother with a son named Danger. Joe thought she was kitschy with her name and story. She barely got through, but at least she has style. I liked her a lot.

Samantha was an 18-year-old high school student that goes to an all-girls school. She was super adorable with a killer carrot cake. However, the judges thought she was too young and inexperienced for the show, which was the right call. I’d rather see her come back in a few years and rock the show.

Ryan was notable for being another privileged rich kid. There’s always one in every show. The judges asked what he had been doing for the past two years and he replied that he is unemployed by choice. He had not “found his calling” yet. He managed to sneak through, but we’ll see how much he actually knows about cooking.

Last and most impressive was Christine. A helper brought her in because she’s blind! She impressed the judges so much by her determination and spirit that we actually saw Joe tear up. All three judges agreed that she should get an apron. There were some nasty messages on twitter damning the judges for letting her through. Her fans responded by telling those people “You’re sick! Get some help! How stupid of you to be so ignorant!”

What do you think of Christine being let through?
