Last week on MasterChef 2012, David Martinez was eliminated in a steak battle with Josh.

The Contestants

  • Monti Carlo
  • Christine Ha
  • Frank Mirando
  • Becky Reams
  • Josh Marks

Mystery Box Challenge

There have been a number of mystery box challenges this far in the competition, so we knew something surprising had to happen. The cooks were told that they would be able to go pick 15 items from the pantry to make their own box. They all came up with a recipe and chose the exact ingredients they would need to make it. The surprises did not end there though, as the judges switched it up. Each chef had to give their box to the person in front of them, totally changing their ingredient selection.

It turned out that this surprising challenge was easy for the remaining five contestants. They each did a fantastic job and the top three were chosen. First was Josh, who was given Frank’s box. In it were the makings of an Italian sausage sandwich, but Josh made a savory bread pudding. Second was Monti, who was given Christine’s box. In it were the makings of a sweet curry, but Monti made a coconut soup called Tom Kha Gai. Third was Christine, who was given Becky’s box. In it were French ingredients, but Christine made a classic chicken and mushroom dish.

It was Josh who won for his unique interpretation of the ingredients, however I think Monti should be given a lot of praise for cooking a Thai dish perfectly.

The Elimination Challenge

Josh had the opportunity to choose one of three dishes that all the contestants would be recreating. He picked a dish that Graham Elliot made for Barack Obama- an intricate sashimi plate. Josh was also given the exact ingredients that were in the dish, but he chose to pick up one extra. He thought that the addition of mango would add sweetness to the dish.

Christine was the best out of everyone and named the winner. The bottom three were Becky, Josh, and Monti. Becky was the best of the three and she was sent back to the kitchen. Josh mangled his tuna and the judges didn’t appreciate the addition of the mango. Monti thought that heavy cream should be added to the avocado mousse but it really changed the flavor of the dish.

It was Monti who was sent home this episode. She was an amazing competitor who surprised everyone at her talent.
