Mango Recall Salmonella Update: Complete Breakdown for US and Canada

The salmonella outbreak sparked by contaminated mangoes in Canada is quickly making its way to the US. Up to date information, As of August 29, 2012, indicates 22 illnesses in Canada associated with contaminated Daniella brand mangoes. The US is experiencing an outbreak of the same strain of salmonella related illnesses and is investigating mangoes as the source as well.

To help consumers stay informed, we’ve created a breakdown of all the information available from product numbers, retailers, number of reported illnesses, contact information and more. Below you will find all of the information released so far, broken down by US and Canada:

Salmonella Outbreak in Canada from Daniella Brand Mangoes:

Illnesses Reported: As of August 22, 2012, there have been 22 confirmed cases of illness in Canada. Of the illnesses, 17 were reported in British Columbia and 5 were reported in Alberta. No other details have been released since August 22, but health officials are concerned more cases will be reported this week after the recall was expanded to include all of Canada.

Recalls: Three official recalls have been released in Canada. North American Product Sales (Vancouver BC) have recalled Daniella brand mangoes with PLU #4949. The fruit was sold between July 12 and August 28, 2012. Fresh Start Foods also issued a recall of GFS sliced mangoes (6 lb; No date or lot code; No UPC), distributed to the hotel/restaurant/institutional market in Alberta and Manitoba. Mex Y also recalled Daniella brand mangoes individual mangoes with PLU #4959 or #4051.

Distribution: The mangoes were distributed nationally.

Salmonella Outbreak in the US Possibly Linked to Mangoes

Illnesses Reported: 101 cases of illness have been reported associated with this outbreak. 75 cases in California, 1 case in Oregon, 6 cases in Washington, 2 cases in Texas and 3 cases in New York. 67 percent of people affected reported eating mangoes.

Recalls: There have been 2 official recalls associated with the outbreak. Splendid Products LLC recalled Daniella brand mangoes PLU #4959 sold between July 12 and August 28, 2012. Charlie’s Produce has recalled Daniella brand mangoes with PLU #3114, 4051, 4311, 4584 and 4959.

Distribution: The following retailers have recalled or withdrawn mangoes imported from Mexico: Copps, Costco, Giant Food, Mariano’s, Martin’s Food Market, Metro Market, Pick ‘n Save, Rainbow, Stop & Shop and Top Food & Drug.
