The retail food chain Kroger has announced that they will be launching their own Keurig single serve coffee cups. Known as K-Cups, the coffee pods are reprogramming containers that only work with the Keurig machines. While an old technology, single serve machines have become very popular in the last few years. A spokesperson for Kroger said that they are also looking into other systems for their coffee. Keurig’s biggest competitor is Tassimo.
Many other companies are looking on tapping the growth of single serve coffee machines. Nestle, Kraft, Sara Lee, Green Mountain, Starbucks, and Mars are all looking on releasing new products for these machines.
Starbucks has recently released K-Cups on June 11th. They previously had coffee pods for Tassimo on the market. In 2011 they canceled their contract with Kraft due to “unacceptably poor” distribution. Keurig has been the most preferred single serve coffee machine on the market and so Starbucks is releasing with them on the promise of better sales.
