The first episode of Season 5 of Cupcake Wars was a big one. It is the 100th anniversary of the Girl Scouts of America, and the prize was to be featured at the celebration gala. The theme of the competition was “Forever Green”, as the Girl Scouts are currently on a mission to educate the public about environmental issues. The judges for this episode were Candace Nelson of Sprinkles Cupcakes, Florian Bellanger of MadMac, and Chelsea Glover-Odom whom was the guest judge and Girl Scout Gold Award Recipient.
The four competing bakeries were Dia Doce in Spring City, Pennsylvania; Violet’s Cakes in Pasadena, California; Cupcake Mojo of Weymouth, Massachusetts; and Pubcakes of San Diego, California. The first competition was to make a cupcake inspired by one of the classic Girl Scout cookies. Pubcakes was the first cut as their cupcakes are all made with alcohol as a theme. Unfortunately this was inappropriate to be served to children and regardless of their flavors, they were cut from the competition. Perhaps they will be invited back for a more adult contest.
The second contest was to create decorations around the theme of “Forever Green”. Half of the judging points would be given to the appearance and half toward the flavors. The judges were looking for vibrant, creative tastes and Mojo cupcakes were sent home for failing to impress.
The final round had Dia Doce and Violets Cakes going head to head in a 1,000-cupcake battle. Each had the help of a carpenter to create a tower to hold the sweets. The green theme continued and Dia Doce built their stand out of recycled materials in the shape of a tree. Violets Cakes built theirs in the shape of a tent, going on the camping theme famous for Girl Scouts. Dia Doce won the competition. Her display was an overwhelming success, with even her competitor being amazed with it.
