This Weeks Theme
This was the first episode in a new spin off of Cupcake Wars. Cupcake Champions ups the level of contestants, challenges, and rewards. All contestants were previous finalists or winners and are coming back to find the best of the best.
The judges for this episode were Florian Bellanger of MadMac Macarons and Candace Nelson of Sprinkles Cupcakes. The guest judge for this episode was Phil McKinley, the director of the musical. This week’s prize was a $50,000 cash prize and to present the winning cupcakes at a New York party for the Broadway musical “Spiderman- Turn Off the Dark.”
Contestants
The four competing bakeries were Rebecca Ybarra for Suite 106 Cupcakes located in Rancho Cucamonga, California; Lily Fischer for A Cupcake Wonderland located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania; Ron Bzdewka for House of Cupcakes Bakery located in Princeton, New Jersey; and finally Heather McDonnell for Cupcrazed Cakery located in Fort Mill, South Carolina.
Round 1: Taste Challenge
The taste test challenge was super foods for superheroes. The teams had to use all of the ingredients in their cakes, and they included: pumpkin, apricots, currants, molasses, oats, and a surprise with kale.
Lily Fischer created a wonderful cupcake that all the judges loved. The rest of the competitors were not so great, and it was tough decision on who was the worst.
It was Ron Bzdewka who was sent home this round for making boring frosting.
Round 2: Visual Challenge
The visual challenge was all about the enemies of Spiderman. There are a “Sinister Six” group of nemeses in the musical and the contestants had their choice of two of those. They all had to use the Green Goblin as the third. Half of the points were awarded for decoration, and half for flavors.
Lily Fischer went for Swarm and Swiss Miss. Rebecca Ybaraa went for Swiss Miss and Carnage. Heather McDonnell went for Swarm and Carnage.
It was Heather McDonnell who was sent home for a lack of professional decorations.
Round 3: Presentation Challenge
The final round had Lily Fischer and Rebecca Ybarra competing in a 1000 cupcake battle. The contestants had to create a display for their cupcakes that invoked the theme of how Spiderman moves through the air. They had to make their display literally fly through the air.
Final Results
The final winner was Rebecca Ybarra for her upfront branding of the Spiderman theme.
