New England Patriots’ wide receiver Chad Ochocinco showed his appreciation to his loyal fans this week by footing the bill for 200 restaurant-goers at Sylvia’s restaurant in Harlem, New York.
The first 200 people to show up would get to meet the loveable football player and receive a free dinner. He tweeted this message to fans to spread the word:
“Dinner in NY tonight –> 1st 200 people at Sylvia’s Restaurant by 7 pm in Harlem. Leave ya money/credit cards at home. I got you this time.”
The festivities were completely spontaneous, Sylvia’s head of public relations (and granddaughter of the founder of the restaurant), Tren’ness Woods-Black, told the media. “This was totally unplanned. That’s the cool thing about Chad.”
Once the tweet was released, fans swarmed the restaurant in a matter of minutes. Sylvia’s posted this pic (above) of the lineup just moments after the tweet went out.
The first 200 lucky fans feasted on ribs, fried chicken, collard greens and macaroni and cheese. In addition to the free meal, Ochocinco handed out his personal phone number to his guests at the end of the night.
Less than impressed with how many texts he was receiving from his new friends after dinner, Chad later tweeted “I gave 200 people my number and only 13 people have texted me. That’s rhino drpppings!!! I gave you my number to use it, let’s go.”
When asked why he decided to foot the expensive bill instead of simply posting a photo of his dinner on Twitter, the generous dad-of-four told reporters “Being able to reach out is better than a picture.”
Chad’s right: food always has a way of bringing people together.
